University Begins Testing Web-Cam Proctor
With more and more students taking classes online, the issue of how to prevent them from cheating on exams is becoming more and more of a dilemma. Unfortunately, forcing students to travel to a test center proctored by a person removes part of the convenience that makes online classes so appealing.

Well, this fall, Troy University in Alabama will begin a trial run using a webcam to deter cheaters. The device comes with software that locks down the PC during a test, preventing you from Googling the answers, and a biometric fingerprint reader to ensure the test taker is who he/she says he/she is.

The big advance here, though, is a webcam that points into a reflective dome for 360-degrees of imagery, and a microphone for capturing any sounds. The camera and microphone start recording as soon as the exam begins. Any significant motion or sound is flagged, which instructors can review either during or after the test.

From now on, it looks like students will have use the old-school answers-on-the-hand technique. Or maybe just crack a book for once.
