Sony Apologizes to Church of England
It was just a week ago that the Church of England took Sony to task for featuring Manchester Cathedral in a bloody battle scene in the PS3 launch title, 'Resistance: Fall of Man.' The Church demanded the scene be removed or the game be taken off of store shelves all together. In addition, it demanded an apology from Sony. Though Sony's initial response was that it had broken no laws, the company has now apologized to the Church, stating, "It was not our intention to cause offense by using a representation of Manchester Cathedral in chapter eight of the work. If we have done so, we sincerely apologize."
This sort-of apology comes despite a number of other games that predate 'Resistance' depicting numerous violent acts on various bits of holy ground -- real and fictional. The WWII-themed shooter franchises, like 'Call of Duty,' 'Medal of Honor,' and 'Brothers in Arms,' often feature gunfights that take place inside of real churches. The games 'Mafia' and 'Hitman' have both racked up huge body counts inside of God's crib, the latter going so far as to have the main character murder an innocent priest. And let us not forget the 'Castlevania' games, which often feature crosses as weapons!
But, it seems Sony is willing to be the one to step up (or rather, bend to bad PR) and take it on the knuckles for the rest of the game industry. No word yet on whether or not the Church of England accepts the apology.
