Cox Ups its Broadband Speeds
Cox has fired up the left blinker and is turning into the fast lane, now offering speedier versions of its cable Internet service in a bid to compete with speed boosts recently deployed by Comcast and Verizon. Preferred plan customers will now see download speeds up to 9 mbps, while Premier plan customers will download at up to 15 mbps. At 15 mbps, you can download a song file in about two seconds, and a feature-length movie in about seven minutes. Comparatively, that same movie would take two-and-half hours on a 768 kbps DSL connection, but only three-and-a-half minutes on a lightning fast Verizon FiOS hookup. In addition to competing on the faster, more expensive end of things, Cox has also introduced an Economy plan to compete with DSL. The Economy package downloads at speeds of up to 768 kbps.
To see how Cox's new numbers stack up against the competition, we've compiled this handy chart
