EA and iD Bring Gaming to Mac

EA and iD Bring Gaming to Mac
Gaming on the Mac has always been a joke -- not for the lack of capable hardware, but for lack of developer support. The best a Mac gamer can hope for -- if there is such a thing -- is that a PC game gets ported over to the Mac a year or so after its original release date. But, according to Steve Jobs, speaking today at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, that's all about to change.

Mega-publisher EA, makers of the incredibly popular 'Madden' franchise as well as such titles as 'Battlefield 2142' and 'Command and Conquer,' is getting back into Mac gaming in a big way, with a raft of Mac versions of their most popular games hitting stores in July.

Additionally, iD, the company behind the landmark shooters 'Doom' and 'Quake,' is cooking up something based on a brand new gaming engine called Tech 5. Not much information is known about the game, except that it will allow gamers to make massive and sweeping changes to the game's landscape. No word on when iD's product will be hitting Apple's machines, either.

Interest in the Mac from such huge players in the developer community is big news, because their software could sell a lot of new Mac machines to the gaming community, a consumer group that has all but ignored Apple in the past.
