Buy More Stuff With Sprint and GPS

Sprint Nextel has just announced a new application that uses GPS-equipped phones to let subscribers search for products in nearby retail stores.

The service, which is called Slifter (and sounds sorta like a rare strain of tapeworm), covers 85 million products available at 30,000 stores across the country. You simply type in a keyword, product name, model number or UPC number. Slifter determines your geographical location using GPS, and then gives you a list of stores that carry the item you're looking for, in order of the stores' proximity to you.

The application can be downloaded to certain Sprint handsets and costs $1.99 per month to use (on top of a required data plan, which costs $15 to $25 per month).

So, basically, you're buying the ability to buy ... just what you're bank account needed.
