Tech Tips for Looking Busy at Work
Use IM to Your AdvantageIn office environments that use instant messaging, workers are expected to be on call at a split-second's notice. Forget to toggle your away message on before going to the bathroom, and it's possible the FBI's Missing Persons Unit will be waiting for you when you return. But, a well-crafted, custom away message can also be a slacker's best friend. For example, who's going to know that, "Can't talk! Swamped!" is actually code for, "Leave me alone. I'm napping under my desk"?

Okay, is it just me or is that "Panic Button" a totally stupid idea?
And is that really a picture of it? I'm assuming it must be a gag gift.
Or maybe there are people out there who don't know to leave multiple windows open at once when they're surfing.

This is really stupid, and it could get you fired. I had to pull my head out of my butt and straighten up on my job before I got axed. People are NOT paid to slack off and pretend to work. The company is depending on you to actually DO YOUR DAMN JOB. Either do your job or quit and collect wellfare. There are enough people out there that are truly eager to have your salary. So either be responsible with your time or be prepared to get pink-slipped. No matter how sneaky you think you are, you will get caught. So, if you are reading this at work. Get off the net and GET BACK TO WORK!!!

This is absolutely insane. Why is AOL encouraging people to be lazy??? There are enough people out there that slack on the job without additional help. Furthermore, it puts a bigger burden on those of us that actually work our A##'s off to shine...this article is completely irresponsible.
KatieJun 1st 2007 9:25PM
Of course you should be working while at work and not slacking off. But this article was still kinda funny. And just a question for those of you who complained that this article was stupid or irresponsible - if you're so completely responsible and working hard all the time, why were you reading it in the first place??
patrickJun 1st 2007 10:34PM
bassically quit complaining most of you that feal your working hard to shine more than likely just haven't been told that you don't work hard enough and seriously what is it with people thinking that they have to take everything so seriously let me guess you are more than likely worried about globel warming to huh lol get a grip this was funny and i give aol two thumbs up for doing a good job of irritating the crap out of you people lol

is it really that serious? first - I work my ass off at work, but I still have a day or two where there's nothing to do (lunch at the desk, waiting for an email...) Working hard doesn't always mean working all day. learn to multitask & gt sht done
2 - at my job and many others, people who sit on their ass all day make the same thing or more than the ones who do all the work. so that 'hard work pays off' thing isn't exactly true.
and i would give aol a thumbs up too, but this article was mostly a waste of time in itself. Id rather be on Facebook :)

Yeah, I have one of those incompetent bosses that judges his staff by how busy you look regardless of what gets done. The stupidest ones look busy all day but don't do sht.
edJun 2nd 2007 12:31AM
I think the people at aol who come up with most of this pointless crap should get canned like tuna, I've wasted 5 minutes reading this that I will never get back. AOl is seriously a pile of steaming feces.

What a laugh to read comments from those who don't realize you can even go online and read when you're not at work! LOL! And of course, there are those who will find the article funny and, in a limited way, useful ... but they're probably the same ones who will stay stuck in a dead-end job, or blame their bad boss when they're let go.
Work with dignity, people!

Patrick and Katie had the best comments. Lighten up, people. Those that actually use these ideas won't go far, but that's there choice. No sense in getting upset about what doesn't affect you. Stress kills!
KrystleJul 26th 2007 11:42AM
The article isn't that serious. Ever heard of entertainment? I agree with Katie on this one. For those of you who claim to work so hard- that's a good thing, but loosen up. If the damn article makes you that mad, you must've been hoping for a sure fire way to slack off. Ah- ha!

Thanks for great tips on how to be dishonest and to steal from your employer. What is the message here? Cheat all you can and grab your paycheck and run? For Shame!

It seems that you would be taking more time stealing and appearing to work which maybe harder than just working. It is easier to just do your work. Let's not let America lose it's work ethics.
get bentJul 25th 2007 3:33PM
You people are taking this too seriously. Furthermore, I bet you're all at work right now, killing time by responding to this stupid list. I know I am! Back to work, chumps.
MaryJul 25th 2007 3:58PM
You are all arguing over a @#%$&* advertisment! It's just a hook to get you to buy the tech gadgets mentioned. Whether you looked to find ways to slack off or to find ways to catch others slacking off, you were suckered! It's just a more sophisticated way of advertising. Most of the AOL stuff in nothing but promos for their paid sponsors.
AshliJul 25th 2007 4:01PM
well, blame yourselfs, your the ones sitting here and doing, I'm actually at home, on my OWN computer. SURE, we all lag just a tad, (a tad has different meaning to different people) but we still have our jobs right? well, somebody had to write this and AOL paid somebody to write it.
ChelseaJul 25th 2007 4:05PM
Has it occurred to anyone that the employers of the people who came up with this article probably okayed it, indicating that they agreed it was funny?
codyJul 25th 2007 5:00PM
you guys are WAY too serious about this!! this was an article meant to entertain moreso than inform. can you ass clowns take a joke? JEEZ! you wasted precious time crying over a space filler? someone call "no-life-loserville" and let them know that a bunch of people are about to move in.
mythandmusicJul 25th 2007 5:31PM
Foolish, foolish, foolish.
Have we, America, stooped so low as to make a public article on how to be a lazy sonofabitch and get away with it?
I hope every single person who does the things on this list gets fired. How stupid.
