Man Charged for Using Cafe's Free Wi-Fi

The Police Chief of Sparta, Michigan, Andrew Milanowski, spotted Peterson and felt that a law was being broken, but he had no idea which one. Neither did Peterson or the owner of the Re-Union St. Cafe. Both were shocked to learn that he was committing a crime.
The law, which is meant to protect the public from computer hackers, has only been on the books since 1979, and was updated in 2000 to cover Wi-Fi access. The law, called "Unauthorized Use of Computer Access," basically says that accessing a computer system without authorization is illegal. According to the Police Chief, this covers hopping on Wi-Fi networks. The law allows for a punishment of up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine. Peterson was offered a drastically-reduced punishment, though, considering most people's ignorance of the law and the fact that the cafe's Wi-Fi network is free and unsecured.

So....does that mean that if I put a wireless router on my computer IN MY HOME so I can use wireless technology on computers in my house......and the router (that will broadcast up to 1/4 mile)...broadcasts far enough that my neighbor in his home uses my service to jump on the Internet...is he "stealing" my service? What are the feds going to do now...waste taxpayers money storming people's houses to see if they are "stealing" wifi from an unsecured wireless router being used in the neighborhood? Sheesh....as if we don't pay enough for foolish crap in this country...

Kaleign,
What you are saying is that "free" is not free.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Radio, TV, uses the airwaves. I listen to radio, I watch TV. They advertise in an effort to get my business. I do not buy. Does that mean I should not listen to radio or watch TV?
You either need to call it something else or put limitations on it or define "free" as something different than it presently is.
