Videogames + School = Learning

Nintendo DS Lite

Videogames are fun, but school is nothing less than a modern-day torture technique (with the added headache of homework and gym class). If you disagree with either of the above statements, you're no longer our friend and if you even try to talk to us at recess we'll spray our Capri Sun Juice Drink in your face and laugh, and our friends will do the same.

Anyway, big thumbs up to a school in Tokyo, which has just introduced Nintendo DS game consoles into English lessons at middle schools, following tests that showed that learning on the DS helped boost students' English vocabulary. After receiving and playing around with the portable console, a group of eighth graders demonstrated a big increase in their knowledge of English words. When one group of 24 students used the software, its vocabulary increased from an average of 1,025 words to 1,386 words -- that's a 35.2 percent rise. Another group of 25 students went from an average of 1,013 words to 1,436 words -- a 41.8 percent increase.

We think we speak for all American students when we say, "more videogames, please."
