PS3 Version 1.8 Coming Tomorrow

Today Sony announced details for the latest revision to the PS3 firmware, which will bring it to v1.8 when it drops tomorrow. It's not quite the 2.0 update rumored last week, but it does add a few major new features to the table.

Most notable is upscaling that allows standard-definition DVD movies and PlayStation games to be displayed at high-definition resolutions. This is something the Xbox 360 can already do for original Xbox games, but can't do for movies (unless you happen to be using the VGA connection or the HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 Elite). Upscaling your old DVDs on the PS3 won't make them look as good as Blu-ray high definition movies, but it'll certainly make them look better than they already do.

Other updates include the ability to access media files stored on your PS3 from your PSP anywhere via the Internet (currently your PSP has to directly connect to your PS3), the ability to stream media from any DLNA-enabled device, and the ability to print out pictures from your PS3 directly to Epson printers.

It's okay -- we think that last one is a little less useful than the others too.
