New Details on AT&T's iPhone Plans

As we inch closer to the June 11th U.S. launch of the iPhone, more and more details are coming to light regarding Cingular-cum-AT&T's plans. Yesterday, it was announced that the iPhone will remain an AT&T exclusive for the next five years. That's a massive amount of time for a provider to lock in exclusivity, comparable only to T-Mobile's grip on the Sidekick. So if you plan on buying an iPhone, you can look forward to being stuck with AT&T for the next half-decade.

But, there is some good news. Rumor has it that AT&T will also offer a no-contract prepay iPhone, which is huge news for those not so interested in signing away their next five years in blood. You'll most definitely pay more for the privilege, though. Other phones when purchased as part of a prepaid plan often cost upwards of $100 more than their contract-laden brethren. Tack that onto the already wallet-abusing $499-$599 iPhone and you have a package that's shot well past the impulse buy range.
