The outer "bulbous-like-growths" are the smaller drivers, tweeter and midrange units, as well as what appears to be ducted ports for bass enhancement. If the unit was designed properly it would not have both a passive radiator and ducted ports, but either/or. From the picture one can't be certain what the exact design complement is.

And there is no such thing as a real subwoofer in any boombox regardless of how persistent the marketing claims are. They are electronically enhanced woofers and may sound good and powerful, but it's not feasible to incorporate a TRUE subwoofer into a boombox format. "Subwoofer" has become a cutsey marketing term but many industry marketers and salespeople don't really know the difference between a subwoofer and a regular woofer.
