Top 25 Tech Inventions of the Last 25 Years
USA Today is running a series of top 25 lists in honor of its 25th anniversary. Their list, "25 Years of 'Eureka' Moments", is a collection of the top 25 inventions of the last 25 years. All the usual suspects are there: Cell phones, laptops, DVD's, iPods, salad in a bag ...
Wait... salad in a bag? Anyway, other items include Karaoke, The StairMaster, and Purell hand sanitizer for the hypochondriacs and obsessive compulsives.
- The GameBoy: The original GameBoy sold over 70 million units and brought us solid portable gaming.
- GPS for the masses: Sure, GPS has been around for a long time, but the death of the map on the back seat is upon us, and our safety/sanity/trees thank us.
- Voice Mail: Remember tape-based answering machines? Yeah, we're trying to forget as well.
- MP3s: Say what you want about the iPod, but if it wasn't for the tiny MP3 file, we'd never be able to carry 5,000 songs in our pocket.
- eBay & PayPal: That junk in your garage? Someone's willing to pay for it on eBay. Trust us.
- Wi-Fi: Wireless Internet was the final step toward making laptops truly portable.

Someone mentioned cell phones, that was good. How about digital cameras, desktop color printers (printers before 82 were black on white only) GPS for your car, cable and disc TV antenna systems adding channels beyond the standard stations, telephone answering machines might fit, remote keyless car entry systems with the device in your pocket or purse, CD and DVD discs in lieu of tapes, electric toothbrushes? How about all the life saving devices and technologies in medicine?

you people have it all wrong. undoubtedly the greatest invention of all time has got to be the beer glove. it keeps your hand warm and your beer cold, works equally well with pint glasses, small and big beer bottles, and allows you the ability to wiggle your fingers to some degree as you drink up. So clever. i rarely go to the pub without it.

CELL PHONE? That is the WORST invention since the Atomm Bomb. It is a cancer to the art of communication. Don't believe me? Next time you are out eating or driving note the passenger/companion sitting there bored as the driver/companion is yacking away "loudly" in most cases. Ignoring the person they are with. Yup it's a cancer.

I have to put this in. The worst "invention" of the last 25 years is the disrespect of our children. I still to this day, and I am 46 years old, always say Yes ma'am, No ma'am,Yes Sir and No Sir to my parents and to all of my elders. The children/young adults of this day are rude, crude and socially unacceptable. The have no respect for their elders and no respect for themselves.Just think how our country will be ran in just a few years from now. It's scary to think of.

Seems I'm "dated" these days.... I am "so yesterday", to use the phracse I hear from some youngsters....probably true...but 70 years ago I built a crystal set radio out of an oatmeal box.. some shellac to stiffen the box..the shellac came from disolving one of those thick 78 RPM records of that era... plus some wire.. a germanium type crystal and a pair of headphones... the whole thing cost a little over 2 dollars..and I listened to half dozen radio stations in the Boston area with that radio... it took no batteries.. no house current and was "on" all the time.. nothing that came later in the way of invention was as exciting to the kids of that day than a homemade radio. The kids today would call that "wow..so yeterday"... I guess they're right.

By far the most signifigant invention in the last 25 years is the word wide web (Internet) in support of the widespread usage of home computers (PC's)...While PC's have been in use beyond 25 years (I know I waw in the computer/application support industry sine the mid-60's)...it's introduction into the household has created a wealth of information at one's fingertips and a sharing of ideas across all manor of industry (medical, law enforcement, academic, etc)...Hand's down the single most influential product (and certainly by-products) to date...
