More Rumors of a PSP Update

Rumors about a new and improved PlayStation Portable (PSP) have abounded ever since the Sony handheld gaming device launched in early 2005. Why? Mainly because the existing model has some drawbacks: Its proprietary UMD movie format offers a limited selection (and sold poorly), it's too big to compete with other media players, and its battery life of under five hours only makes it useful for short trips without a battery pack. Natural, then, that people would hope for an improved PSP. If this latest report turns out to be true, an update could finally be coming this year.

While no details were announced, Sony reps did say that a "a video download service and [PSP] hardware refresh are expected later this year." What the company didn't say, though, was what exactly that "hardware refresh" will involve. It could mean anything from a complete re-design (a la Nintendo's DS Lite) to a minor update for better battery life. We hope Sony will at least fix the troubling eject issue, where slightly twisting your PSP can cause a UMD disk to launch out like an expensive mini-discus.
