Governments Increasingly Censoring the Web

BBC News is reporting that state-sponsored censorship of online content is skyrocketing, going from "a couple" of nations in 2002 to a disheartening 25 out of 41 studied this year. Not surprisingly, the worst offenders include culturally restricted nations such as Iran and Burma, where governments seem to fear their citizens having unrestricted access to communicate with others and the option to anonymously criticize the goings on in their own nations.

The best known offender on the list is China, which first blocked all of Google, then managed to get the company to censor itself in order to be let back in, a move many believed was in violation of the Internet search phenomenon's "don't be evil" pledge.

We just hope that our Pakistani and Syrian readers aren't missing out on the latest Hollywood happenings.
