The Top 15 Tech Myths
We love lists -- you should have figured that out by now. This time, PC World came up with 15 tech myths, bursting one bubble at a time. We list a few highlights here.Using third-party ink in your printer voids the warranty
Just plain not true. Of course, if the third-party ink damages the printer, then you're out of luck. But simply using third-party ink does not let Epson off the hook if your printer suddenly bursts into flames.
'Unlimited' cell phone data access is really unlimited
Think that extra $19 a month has you covered for all the data (e-mail, downloads, Web surfing) you want on your cell phone? Think again. Verizon's Terms of Service (TOS) forbids streaming media, uploading and downloading files and even has a 5 gigabyte-per-month cap on data. Cingular/AT&T also forbids media streaming and file sharing but has no data cap. And Sprint says it "reserve[s] the right to limit or suspend any heavy, continuous data usage that adversely impacts [its] network performance or hinders access to [its] network." Annoyingly vague, to put it lightly.
Macs are virus-free
Despite what the Cult of Mac tells you Macs are not 100 percent safe. A security researcher named Dino Dai Zovi took home a $10,000 prize for remotely hijacking a MacBook Pro. It took less than 10 hours to discover a security hole in Quicktime and set up a Web page to exploit it. Also, January was The Month of Apple Bugs as a pair of hackers revealed a new security hole in the OS for each day. In February the first worm virus for OSX was discovered. Macs are still more secure than Windows PCs, but because they're less popular, they tend to be less of a target.

It's practically obvious that the quote "internet" function of a cell phone is not unlimited. Imagine how incredibly crowded all 6 gigahertz or so of the radio frequency spectrum would be if everyone was downloading DVD movie .ISOs and .WAVs from audio CDs illegally off of file sharing because they were guaranteed 5 mbits/sec of speed?? And that's not counting the space in the spectrum needed for fire/police/ambulance/CB radio/AM-FM audio/wireless gadgets around the house and not to mention 800 or so megahertz worth of television.
You can't break Shannon's Theorem, sorry.

I don't care what type of OS you use, all printers tick me off whether they are (Lexmark,H/P,ect). I bought a new Lexmark all in one printer on a good sale with all the software included along with the ink cartridges. Now I find out to replace the color and black cartridges that it will cost more than what I paid for the printer. Guess I will toss it and buy another (new one) cheaper than what the ink cartridges cost. I would say this is a problem with PC's and or MAC's.

I have both Mac and PC computers. The PC computers have a higher rate of locking up than the the Mac (it hasn't yet). The Mac was taken out of the box and it has worked flawlessly. I was brought up on IBM style computers, since I worked for the military. My learning curve with the IBM version was quite steep, i.e. knowing what to do when it froze up, burped or puked. We named Bill G. "Reboot". That was done more in humor than anything. We did not call people "Assholes" or degrade them in any other way. A computer is a electronic piece of machinery. We have some programs that require Windows 98 and the Mac system offers a way to use parallels that we can run Windows 98 on a new machine, which is an added value to my wife and I. The PC/IBM types don't allow us to digress to an older Windows program. This has made the Mac invaluable to us. Yes we have 4 IBM/PCs and two MACs, but we are going to migrate to Macs, because of our history trail. I have friends that use IBM/PCs, I hope they have good sucess, and love them. A friend that is in his late 60's and until 5 years ago had never touched a computer, Bought a HP, and then a Laptop PC to take with him (He is a snow bird). His HP took a dump, Friends reconstituted his HP, Thank God for Good Friends.

Printers source of unrest with most all pc and mac users. I agree that printer cartridges are over priced, and low printer prices are used to coerce people into buying those High price printer cartridges. We have been using the same HP cartridges for the last 4 years! We have been going to the Dollar tree and forking down 4 dollars for four colors of ink and refill our high priced cartridges as much as we want. Works good and lasts long time.. end of story.

seriously this is the dumbest thing to fight about. If you like PC's then fine and if you like Macs then fine. I personaly have a PC and I'm planning on buying a Macbook soon because I have only had problems with windows. Also, a side note, there are a lot of Macs out there. The high school I went to only had Macs, as did other high schools in the area. Plus my college has both Macs and PCs. A lot of schools have them because they are better for graphic design classes.

mac should of won if it weren't for the perception that IBM was the standard in the pc market of the time. Just because GM ADVERTISES their cars on programing you watch dosen't make their cars better than any other cars. Other examples beta better than vhs...beta better..lost.Clinton a good president..we lost he did absolutely nothing and in fact weakend the country.Lesson.. perception is more often than not reality.People wake up and dig into all the facts...your being manipulated. Objective thinking is difficult with all the static but the real undeniable truth is often right in front of you.

Well.. All of the above has been quite entertaining to say the least..and humorous at that..Being a systems engineer/technician since
back when they had only 8 bit machines..along with Mini's and Mainframes..(The big boxes) I had the opportunity to work on all of them..(I hope this helps..)Who would have known what power was to come from such a small package.. and back then, DOS and Unix ruled...(PC Dos came from Unix) And when the MAC came out, (Apple computers, also unix based)... I was still pretty much biased myself towards the (Windows)PC. (Change is difficult for some..) The MAC architecture was whole new platform to learn and understand at the time.. and the fact that you had to purchase just about everything for it software wise, was a joke...a costly joke at that.. for most of us..and still is today!...
However, one thing not mentioned throughout the above comments, was MACs' power in the Music industry. Being into music production, I was convinced to get a dual G5 OSX based system from the folks at the Guitar center so as
to run either Nuendo or Pro-Tools (High end music production software apps.). It was my transition from Digital Tape recording to a total digital / hard disk recording domain..Results...Awsome!! is to say the least.. A PC could never handle the full load .... for example, running 32 tracks along with plugins added to each track to begin with... and then some! Some of those plugins can be a resource hog. Try running that amount of tracks combined with MIDI and automated mixing along with the various hardware interfacing required, on a PC...Talk about tire screeching on into a crash!... So much for that..
As for service..well the MAC/dual G5 did have a problem at first..a hardware bug or two.. but Apple eventually replaced the whole machine for me!..after I did my homework...I guess if I didn't have a technical background, I may have been railroaded... As for the lady who's son's battery exploded...They should have replaced the whole damn thing..Sorry to hear that!..glad to hear he wasn't burned or something..a hell of a case to pursue??
To sum it up for me.. As for the MAC I use it exclusively for recording.. etc.. As for the PC.. I use it for mostly everything else... I'm curious to see how the new Intel duo core's and quad core processors running Vista will hold up running multitracking/ post production software such as Pro-Tools/ Nuendo...Although I don't think Vista is cut out for it at this time, I'm in the process of buying a new laptop, duo core based, to see.. (I believe the O/S will determine that). (How well it utilizes the duo core technology) For me, it remains to be seen...So before I drop the cash...
If anyone has the answer via experience on this.. please let me know.. Well..enough said...So..Lets all Play nice now..!...yeah right!..;)peace...for real!..
