Meebo Rooms Make Online Video Mutual
The success of sites such as YouTube and Revver means entertaining videos are never more than a few clicks away -- a great diversion when you have a few minutes to kill. Sometimes, though, watching these videos alone on your computer can be an awfully lonely affair, a far cry from the social heydays of piling a bunch of friends in the living room to watch 'The Real World' together.
That all changes today thanks to a new service from instant messaging wundersite meebo. Called meebo rooms, the new service lets users post videos, pictures, and other media directly into a designated private chat room and talk live with their friends about said videos and pictures.
When you're in a room, you can just drag in a link to something like, say, a YouTube video or a Flickr photo to show it to your chat-roommates . The video or picture can then be run in a big window that anyone can see. Chatters can select media by clicking on thumbnails on a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen.
If you don't feel like starting your own room, or just want some variety, you can choose from any number of rooms meebo has launched. The service has scored partnerships with NBC Universal, CNET, and GameTrailers.com, among others. This means you'll have plenty of places to visit, including public rooms dedicated to everyone from music artists like Lily Allen and Mandy Moore to publications like VIBE Magazine, all full of videos and pictures to chat about.
You can also embed meebo rooms right into your Web site or MySpace page, so people can chat and share videos or pictures of whatever it is you're into, whether it's climbing things or jumping off of things.
The service is of course free and accessible to anyone who logs into meebo's site via their existing AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, or instant-messaging programs.
