Switched Questionnaire: Fountains of Wayne

Bands that tour tend to bring a lot of portable gadgets with them. And indie/power-pop foursome Fountains of Wayne is no exception. Fresh off the release of its latest album Traffic and Weather -- and getting ready for a U.S. tour this summer -- the band sent its co-founder, guitarist, and lead vocalist Chris Collingwood to tell Switched exactly what he loves and hates about gadgets.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I'm writing this right now on my Samsung Blackjack. I really like it, but I have really fat thumbs, so I'd rather be using a letter-recognition pad.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

To my dad. We're playing in Philly in a few days, and the hometown guest list is always a last-minute scramble.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

First stop is always fark.com. Word of mouth has turned this site (and its founder, Drew Curtis) into a cult phenomenon.

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop (or any other gadget)?

Mostly I just get pissed off because the gadgets I get are very quickly out-of-date. I tend not to spend money on uber-gadgets for that very reason.

Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop (any gadget) could do that it doesn't do now?

I wish they were all one device -- a phone, a PDA, an MP3 player, a Web-connected computer, and a handheld gaming console, so I could get my Grand Theft Auto fix. Maybe a PSP with a keyboard that was also a phone.

Is there an upcoming gadget you cannot wait to get your hands on?

I can't wait for Madden '08, which isn't a gadget but a video game by EA sports wherein the Steelers get to kick the Browns's ass, over and over again. My idea of heaven.

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

I'm assuming there's no cell service, right? Because my first priority would be to get the hell off the island. Other than that, probably my PSP. And a go-kart.

Tell us the most-played song or artist on your iPod?

Lately it's been Hank Williams. I go through phases and lots of people give me stuff when I'm on the road.

Are you getting an iPhone?

No. I can't see why. Seems like a lot of money for what it does. I want satellite Wi-Fi and and an altimeter if I'm spending that much money.

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

Never more than half an hour on anything - starts to rot the brain.
