Sony Readying PS3 Replacement?
Is Sony already calling it quits on the ailing PlayStation 3? According to a Sony source cited by Australian Web site, Smarthouse, a new PlayStation machine from the one-time console champ is less than 18 months away. This won't be PS4, however. The new machine will build upon the architecture of the existing PS3 hardware, adding to it a new drive bay and the means to attach unspecified peripherals. It's also said to include a software suite for managing various media -- streaming movies, recorded TV and the like. The new console will be positioned as more of a home entertainment center rather than as a gaming machine.
Whether this rumor holds any water remains to be seen. But what we do know is that Sony tried the same thing in 2003 with the PSX -- a combination DVR/PS2. It failed so miserably in Japan that it never landed on American soil.
