Bargain Pioneer Blu-ray Drive

Bargain Pioneer Blu-ray DriveThe battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD rages on, and at least one product just got a little cheaper. Pioneer just announced that it will be bringing its BDC-2202 Blu-ray drive to the U.S. in June, for a rather low price of $299 (most Blu-ray drives out there cost about twice as much, if not more). It can read BD-ROM discs at up to 5x, and dual-layer discs at 2x speeds.

Now, you'll need to install this in your computer, but if you're tech-savvy or know someone who can do it for you, you stand to save some money.

By the way, we're also posting this because a couple of tech blogs out there are misreporting that this model is an actual Blu-ray player. These blogs, which shall go unnamed, even feature a picture of a Blu-ray player, which most certainly the BDC-2202 is not.

If you want a sub-$400 HD-quality disc player, you'll have to opt for HD-DVD, and, specifically, the $399 Toshiba HD-A2.
