Calling Is Out, Texting Is In

Calling is Out, Texting is In

A new report from JD Power is showing some interesting, though perhaps unsurprising trends in the cell phone world. According to its latest annual report, cell phone calls have declined for the first time in the ten years statistics have been compiled. Callers who pre-pay for their phones made an average of ten calls per week this year, down from 14 last year. Those locked into multi-year contracts made just 27 calls per week versus 35 a year before.

The report points to increased text messaging and mobile e-mailing as the cause of the drop. The average number of text messages sent per week climbed from 32 to 46 this year. And as call volume has declined, so too has the cost to consumers, with contract customers saving 20 percent on their bills and month-to-month callers saving up to 36 percent.

Less cell phone chatter is a good thing, right? Perhaps. Or perhaps we've just traded one modern annoyance for another. While you might hear fewer people talking on phones at the movies, you now have put up with friends tapping away on their cellphones as you try to have a conversation with them.
