25 Innovations That Shaped the 'Net
From David Letterman to the OCD-stricken -- everyone loves making lists. 'USA Today' is getting in on the action by celebrating its 25th birthday with 25 weeks of Top 25 lists. Today, it's the top 25 innovations that shaped the Internet.
It's all in there: Google, Amazon, Yahoo and eBay (not to mention parent company AOL). Newcomers like YouTube, MySpace and bloggers are all represented, as are the really important things we all take for granted these days, like e-mail, graphics and instant messaging.
Number one on the list: the World Wide Web. (If you're thinking to yourself, "But the Internet and World Wide Web are the same thing," you should read this.) Interestingly, spam, spyware, gambling and porn also made the list.
Not on the list? Crappy, overpriced, over-hyped Super Bowl ads.

I don't know how much more obvious your statement could be... LOL.... how much did those companies sell for... if that isn't innovation what is your definition. They are IDEA'S that blew out of proportion and right now are still big hits... HENCE innovating... Google just topped Microsoft! A monopoly that has been number 1 for years..
Why do blogs get filled with critics that don't think out side the box?
Alex says:
I absolutely agree with "Jeff" and his analysis of the innovation list. How can search engines, web pages, and video postings be regarded as the top 25 innovations? The person designing the list, as Jeff mentions, must of had a difficult time assembling that ridiculous list.

Thanks Chuck and Vanessa. It was important as I didn't know that actual difference.
Sandy - Get back to work. There is also a difference between having a job and having a paycheck.

Are you people serious? Am I reading some spoof site to piss people off? The World Wide Web and the Internet are not the same thing? Its like comparing it to cars and the road they travel on???? No, WE WOULD BE THE CARS, AN THE NET (SORRY GEEKS WEB,whatEVER) is the road WE PEOPLE travel on. And just like driving, things come out at you, that you have no control over whatsoever. What are you people smoking? MY point is, why isn't there an FCC for the internet? Why do I have to see porn and sick %$^&*% when I am not someone who is disgusting enough to enjoy it? BECAUSE ITS MAKING SOMEONE MONEY.
MONEY. That's all that matters in the great ol' US of A.................

For nearly a decade I've been making remarks like, "I really miss the Internet" to the confusion of others who see me working online all day. After reading the comments, I now understand the confusion -- few people know the difference between the Internet and WWW. Sure, I agree the WWW is extremely useful and saves daily time and I couldn't run my small business without it. But it has smothered various points of access for research such as direct connections to FTPs for FREE information, i.e., Gopher library sites (something I'll spare you the details of, lest I only add to the confusion). Overall, this short article is actually on-the-money -- and "money", folks, is what the WWW is all about. If you can't understand the comparison of the highway and the car (possibly the best explanation), perhaps you'll understand the comparison of 1960's television verses cable or satelite TV (some things used to arrive on the screen at no additional cost). Fact is, the WWW USES the Internet to sell its wares.

Of course, we cannot forget AL GORE'S priceless contribution, for he INVENTED the internet! Yes! It's true! He said so himself!
He has the patent framed and hanging on his wall...right next to his patent for the "wheel."

has anyone ever seen the SNL sketches with the office IT geek(Jimmy Fallon)? Right now your all screaming "MOVE!" Who cares!!! It's here, we all use it, and it's awesome! web, internet, cars, road...blah, blah, blah!!!!

I love the net or web what ever you like to call it. Email, On line bill pay, Videos, Music, Info, VOIP.

Internet, web, world wide web, etc.; why do I care what it's called? It's a beautiful invention, and used properly, an asset to mankind. It's mis-used by too many people which may, one day, give government a reason to step in and regulate in order to "protect the masses." Cyberspace is clogged with spam, scams, pop-ups, virus's, forwards of forwards of forwards, etc. We, the users, can stop much of this abuse and reclaim this resource by refusing to read, answer, or forward this trash, and by making maximum use of software designed to detect and eliminate the trash.

Yes, I do also use the net/web @ work, Activating cell phones and pagers.

geh. what Al Gore did with the internet was bring it to the ppl. it was at first in military and academic institutions as a way for them to communicate with each other very quickly and out of the lime light. which in the military's case could be a good thing. we don't want/need our enemies to get any of our military info. but Gore thought it would be a good idea if good ol joe next door could use it the same way to communicate with his kid away at school on the east coast. and what do you know, it worked! go Gore! :)

Gore is a Bunghole! He talks green then drives his big Mercedes-Benz to show eveyone whats going on in the world. Dont forget the Jets, they are very green. Why is he not driving a Toyota Prius in his film. He needs to set an example. Oh the house that he lives in is also very green.

If we are going to use an analogy, let's use an accurate one...
Browsers are the cars because only browsers travel and move from place to place...
The Internet is the road that all browsers travel on to reach different destinations for different reasons and purposes...
Websites are like street addresses, and like street addresses, each website can be anything from a convenience store, to a shopping mall, to a business, to a friends house, to a school, to a family member.
Web pages are like different rooms of a house, or different areas of a store within the website.
Like street addresses and buildings, websites and web pages cover a vast variety of different places for different purposes and for different reasons... some are brand new, while others need paint, some need maintenance, others need repair, and some even need bulldozed. And some are even under construction.

Hmmm What have I learned from this??? I learned that for the most part the same few people comment on here and they seem to like to sit in judement of others. Correcting other peoples spelling ( more than one person commented on spelling in one post) I also learned just how judemental some people can be for exaample....
Jeff told me that in HIS opinion
Um.. Whoever wrote this is pretty stupid if they honestly believe everything they listed was a unique innovation.
Google for one is an over-invested company that tries to please the investors by purchasing site left and right.
Youtube is just a video hosting site where fat and friendless people can gather to feel a sense of popularity.. Lesser video hosts have been around for a long time.
Myspace.. An improved copy of AOL hometownpages.. Nothing more..
So far I learned all that I also suspect that the author of all that has a mysapce page,a Youtube account and uses Google daily. **Again that is just what I suspect yet this was clearly written only to make him feel somehow superior to all the MILLIONS of others who use these sites.** It's just one article out of God knows how many that are written and posted on the internet and the web. It seems to me if you really hated the article why take the time to leave such a long comment if not trying to compensate for other areas in ones life?
I learned that christhelast found this to be a waste of time and wonders if anyone really gained anything by reading it? I can answer that ...YES I DID!! I learned that the rating of my antivirus software I use has fallen quite a bit and I really need to change it ASAP!! I for one am glad I started reading this article and followed the links to the section on the aintivirus software. So you see some people did and may have gained something by reading this article.
Lastly I learned that Amos thinks "Gore is a Bunghole!".... While yes Gore like most of us may not be perfect lets not forget that the man has managed to bring attention to an issue that our current Administration has ignored, and even gone so far as to black out most of the scientific findings related to this issue. Once again sure he is imperfect he is after all only human. Regardless of what part of the human body he reminds you of, If we all took up causes with such a passion isn't it possible that the world might be better for it?
Lastly I learned some people just have to much time on their hands. I also learned that I have already given this post more time than I intended so I will bid you all good-bye and good night.
