New Eye Camera for PlayStation 3

While the EyeToy -- a motion-sensitive camera that lets you play games by just moving around -- never really caught on all that well for the PlayStation 2, it hasn't stopped Sony from trying again. The company just announced a newer, higher-tech camera for the PS3. Called simply the PlayStation Eye, the new peripheral is a nice step up from the earlier, simpler EyeToy. The Eye includes four microphones for capturing sound regardless of where you are in a room, two zoom levels, and the ability to capture video at 120 frames per second. However, it still can't capture high-definition video.

So far only one game has been announced to work with the Eye, called 'Eye of Judgment.' It's a card-based in which you place cards with specific codes onto a playing surface to summon 3-D monsters. The codes are read by the Eye and the monsters appear on your television. We thought it was fun to play when we checked it out at last year's E3 video game conference, but ultimately felt the game was gimmicky. We hope the full release will flesh things out a bit further. No word on price or specific availability dates, but the cam is set to launch in Europe first, sometime this summer, with a U.S. release to follow sometime later this year.

In related news, Sony is set to announce eyeVio -- a YouTube-like service -- as early as today. Presumably the video-uploading service will offer some special features that would enable users to make movies using the Eye and uploading them from their PlayStation 3s. We'll let you know as soon as we find out.
