JetBlue May Add In-Flight Text-Messaging
First Air France, then European low-cost carrrier Ryanair... and now JetBlue. The ability use your mobile phone while your plane is in flight may be coming to the US.
JetBlue has made no official announcement other than admitting it is examining the possibility of offering text messaging services. Jet Blue has stated that it has misgivings about offering voice services on flights, but that text messaging might be an attractive option. Of course, this still all has to get past the FCC.
We would welcome text-messaging capability using our own cell phones on U.S. flights, but the offering pales in comparison to the full in-flight Wi-Fi service provided by Connexion by Boeing, which was shuttered at the end of last year. Still, an article in the Financial Times, which highlights JetBlue's in-flight mobile initiatives, as well as those of other airlines, says that Southwest Airlines is considering more robust mile-high Wi-Fi offerings.
It's ironic that the discount carriers are way ahead of the traditional carriers in terms of in-flight services (after all, JetBlue had TV in every seat way before the more established airlines). It also sounds as though JetBlue is busy trying out initiatives to lure back customers, many of whom are still miffed by the airline's collosal series of delays and cancellations during a big blizzard back in February.

How about listening to music or watching the movie? Maybe take a nap or chat with the person you're traveling with and/or the person sitting next to you. Do we always have to be tied to our cell phones? Take a break...

Does anyone out there think about possible terrorist threats using these devices inflight?
I guess that the 9/11 events are no longer in the minds of Americans when it comes to flying. It is all about "me" and not about security. How stupid!

In addition, there IS interference with navigational equipment with electronic devices used onboard, people! Do your homework!

Please, please let's not go down this road. I have yet to hear someone on their cell phone talking about something so earth shattering that it cannot wait until a later time. Imagine travelling on a 6 or 7 hour flight and having to listen to the person next to you yacking away. I love Jetblue, but if cell phone on their flights comes to pass I will definitely go elsewhere.

Until it is actually proven that it is safe for all of the passangers to be able to scream into their cell phones and annoy each other during the flight I would perfer that they not be used. OOOPs on a plane can be the last OOOPS you hear because some moron has to call someone to pass the time.

My first concern is from a security point of view. Do we need hijackers being able to coordinate their plans by phone or text? I don't think so. Ban all phones. I don't even like people who drag their computers on board and then push their seat back the whole flight into someone elses face in order to use it..
I agree with those who say most flights are a short time frame, and phone users will need to grow up and wait. NOTHING is that urgent. I don't want to listen to a few hours of cell phones ringing and people yelling into their phones.

Many of you have made several valid points already that should not be argued, end of story. Security risks being the priority.
Sitting in a coach seat having arm rest battles is already annoying as is. But now I get to endure that, and listen to some deuschbag with a "Cheeserburger in Paradise" ringtone flap his gums about his trip to Disney World" Yippeeeeee

Total insanity ... no use of cell phone on airplanes..text messages or voice...let peace and tranquility prevail on flights..people abuse the use od cell phones on the ground, please dont permit this to be in the air.NO NO NO...

I agree with everyone. Airplanes are one of the few sacred places left in this age of technology where no one can reach you. You can escape for least a few hours. Why spoil it.

I will attempt to avoid ANY airline that offers voice cell phone. There are enough noises - distractions on an aircraft already. Let us have some peace in this hectic world. Who REALLY needs to talk to someone when they are in the air? Not very much you could do about it at the time - once you land than okay..

flying on Jet Blue has almost always been a real treat. With outgoing and pleasant in flight attendants, tv screens and music to help me pass the few hours on the plane, nothing could be finer...so to speak. I do not believe for a moment that Jet Blue or other airlines will come to allow actual phone calls on a cell phone while up in the air, although other alternatives will surely be available very shortly.
If I had a choice to fly anywhere on any airline, it still is and will remain Jet Blue. And I live in Canada, and have to drive to Buffalo, but still make that choice constantly.
