Windows Live Spaces Gets New Face(book)

Windows Live SpacesWhen Microsoft launched MSN Spaces back in 2004, hardly anyone noticed. It enabled users to post up pictures and info about themselves but not much else. Through the years it has grown into a proper competitor for social-networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, with new features and functions added regularly to make it a more attractive place to call home online.

Now, the re-branded Windows Live Spaces has seen another upgrade designed to help tie its network of 93 million users together even more tightly...and to make the site stand up to the competition a little better, too. The update, released on Friday, enables users to send messages to each other directly from within the Live Spaces interface, something MySpace or Facebook users will be very familiar with. Spaces users can also post comments on each others pages now, again par for the course, and can flag what they're currently up to a la Facebook.

The updated Windows Live Spaces offers nothing you can't already do somewhere else, but its intuitive and stable interface puts it a notch above MySpace in terms of usability. And, if you're inclined to be a little different, the service is a solid alternative to Facebook.
