One Million Blu-Ray Discs Sold

The Blu-ray Disc Association announced today that over one million Blu-ray discs have been sold, giving it a full 70% share of all high-definition disc sales.

Since last year, Blu-ray and HD-DVD have gone head-to-head in a race to be the next High Definition digital video format. Each brings HD video and audio, but Blu-ray promises more storage space for high-def DVD extras, while HD DVD touts more affordable players.

Some say Blu-ray owns 70% of the market because of Sony's Blu-ray compatible PlayStation 3 gaming console. Others, however, insist that the format's early success is due to the fact that more studios -- essentially every movie house but Universal -- have hopped on board with big-name exclusives like Casino Royale and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. That said, with the impending release of two million affordable HD DVD players to be sold at Wal-Mart, this format war is far from over.
