Get BlackBerry on a Non-BlackBerry Device
Yes, the Samsung BlackJack, the T-Mobile Dash and the MotoQ may be the sexiest, sleekest, and slimmest smart phones on the market, but they've got one serious handicap: Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition, the stripped-down mobile-phone version of the world's most popular operating system. Anyone who's ever owned a device that uses Windows Mobile knows that it can be -- pick one -- glitchy, slow, and confusing. But there's some good news for anybody who bought one of these babies and wants an alternative without having to buy a new handset entirely. This fall, RIM, the company that makes the BlackBerry, will be releasing a software suite that lets you use BlackBerry software on Windows Mobile devices. This means you'll be able to take advantage of the BlackBerry's usually reliable push-email services for checking your mail on the go in real-time, among other features.
The good news is you'll still be able to toggle back and forth between BlackBerry and Windows Mobile operating systems, which means you can still use Windows Media Player, for example, to listen to all those subscription songs you downloaded off of Napster.
One caveat: You'll need to have upgraded your phone to Windows Mobile 6 in order for the BlackBerry suite to work. You'll start to see Windows Mobile 6 devices in stores in the next few weeks, but if you've got an older phone, check with your provider to make sure the upgrade is possible on your device.
