Affordable Pioneer AVIC-S2 Delivers Tunes

The GPS market is getting flooded with small, inexpensive devices that are as easy to install in your car as they are to program and use. This is good news for consumers, as more and more choices on the market means better and cheaper ones down the road.

The latest to enter the fray is Pioneer's AVIC-S2, a small portable device that includes coverage for the entirety of U.S. and Canada right out of the box. The S2 is a follow up to Pioneer's earlier AVIC-S1, which received good but not great reviews. The S2 delivers all the same features as the S1, including a 3.5'' anti-glare LCD, Bluetooth connectivity to act as a hands-free kit for your cellphone, and a database of 1.5 million restaurants and other points of interest. What's new is MP3 playback, letting you store music on an SD card then pipe it through the navigation system.

While music capability is a nice upgrade for a sub-$500 GPS device, the S2 includes only a one-gigabyte SD card, down from a two-gigabyte in the S1, so you'll have to shell out $10 for a bigger one. Big deal. Look for this one to show up in stores in the next couple of weeks.
