Fifteen billion batteries are sold each year, most of which end up at the landfill when they die. Rechargeables are, of course, a better option -- especially these nifty AAs that juice up from your computer's USB port rather than a bulky, socket-sapping charging station. Two AAs will cost you $19.50, while nine-volts and a model for cameras and smart phones are also available.

Well here's another nutty idea. Not rechargable batteries, but the idea that charging through your computer uses less energy. It costs the same to recharge through either devise. Recharging batteries comes from power plants that burn coat and natural gas. How does that help?

Harry. It didn't say that it took less energy. They said using rechargable batteries was better than using tons and tons of disposable batteries that become toxic landfill.

I believe it would take less energy to recharge these on a desktop. Computers use switching mode power supplies, while a good many devices and chargers will use transformer based power supplies. A switching mode powersupply can be much more effecient. But like Carla said, the point is that rechargables help save money, resources, and can be extremely convienent.

Good idea to reduce the landfill's, but how well do they perform.
