I would agree that the ability to convert vinyl to CD format (thus making them more portable as well as preserving the vinyl) makes a difference, it is not the overall reason.
Nostalgia, curiousity, album cover art and of course the fact that vinyl records are much better than the "binary sound" you get with a download also have contributed to the resurgence. But, I would also add that vinyl really never went away, in fact, vinyl just waits for the latest musical format fad to die out and then people remember why vinyl has never died....it is all about sound quality. I will admit to being a bit biased :)
