Remember the old Stephen King flick 'Maximum Overdrive,' in which all machines suddenly go berserk and start murdering humans? While we're not quite there
yet, lots of casual technology users are paying a very high price for the modern conveniences that their gadgets afford them: Their health, and, in some cases, even their lives, are in jeopardy. The next time you visit the doc (or a mortician) for one of the following ailments, you may discover it's your electronics that are to blame.
Sore Thumbs
The condition: The diminutive keyboards on
BlackBerrys, Treos, Sidekicks and other QWERTY phones can wreak havoc on one's ability to signal approval with a good old "thumbs up." Pain, numbness, swelling and tendinitis are all symptoms of what the
American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) officially recognizes as "BlackBerry Thumb," caused by overworking the one digit that separates us from the apes.
How to prevent or cure it: Avoid BlackBerry Thumb by typing with your fingers instead of your thumbs, and not typing for more than few minutes at once. If you're already stricken with the ailment, several massage therapists now offer massages specifically for the
treatment of BlackBerry Thumb.
Engadget founder Pete Rojas went for one, which he chronicles
here. Pete's assessment: "I don't think a single massage can remedy years of abuse!"

In answer to "carol" she doesn't own a cell phone.I assume you do own a telephone? You own a computer.. you are on the web making statements!
So you may come up w/ any of the ailments said because of using a computer. Not much dif than a cell phone.
I disposed of our home phone yrs ago.. why pay for something that wasn't used?
Cell phones are a must have just as computers are today. If you do not have them and use them YOU will become the "dinosaur of the past".
I have made my business so much better using computers .. but the Cell, that is the link to the universe! Cell's can do any/everything now.
If you don't have one, you may as well stay home and bake cookies.. for those of us who make the world a better place.
As far as talking on the phone while driving.. look.. stupid is as stupid does!
1. you do not.. repeat, you do not have to answer the Cell the second it rings! That is what that neat little thing that records a message is for.. reply when you can stop the car and talk! DUH!
2. Don't be impolite when making a purchase or at the bank.. talking on the phone for the world to hear your conversation.. and not acknowledging the cashiers! Nimrod.. you are not that important and neither is your conversation~!
Hang up and take care of business w/ the person infront of you. Trust me, you never know how short changed you are.. because you are too stupid to count your money before putting it in your pocket! Your busy talking on the phone!
LOL and you are short changed!
3. I say let the cell phones cause a low sperm count..
That just means that there won't be "babies" for my tax dollar to support on welfare recep's or those who are too stupid to use a piece to keep it away from their bodies!
4. Speaking of devices to use a cell hands free!
Almost all cell phones these days are handsfree. Meaning you do not have to place it in hand/ at your ear! Hands Free!!!!!!!
So why are you driving down the street w/ it stuck in your ear? Use the speaker phone.. talk and no one will know you are on the phone, nimrod! People around you will not get as ticked off at you.. if you realize .. most everyone has a cell you are not as special as you may think!
As far as blackberrys etc.. great for those who need them.. when used properly and at the proper time, am sure!

Ashley: we have overweight people, not because of technology.. but because it is much much less expensive to eat fast food or cheap food.
If you can spend any amt of money on food.. you can afford a salad w/ grilled chicken and a tea for $15 for lunch. As someone who can't afford
$15 ..for lunch.
Infact $15 is what I spend for the day for lunch breakfast and some times you can add it up for dinner too..
I spend if I can, $2 for lunch! Some days I can only afford $1.00 for a hot sandwich, and I drink water which is free out of a water fountain!
Eating proper foods/groups.. is extremely expensive! Eating a $1 sandwich and water.. isn't!
That is why Americans are so unhealthy/over weight! We are busy providing our tax dollars for others to live off of that come into our country and sponge off of us!
Don't even get me started on that!

Bob: You said some things that made a lot of sense.. and some that didn't!
big mac fries.. and diet coke. Obviously you don't drink diet drinks.
As in any food.. you get use to the taste. I could never understand the same thing you commented on, why a diet coke?
Well, I started drinking diet drinks because my husband is diabetic.
Now I know why ! You get use to the taste, and soon prefer a diet coke or whatever.. to the heavy sugar taste of regular soda's.
I have gotten so I can't handle a regular soda..too sweet!
So you have to try it to like it Bob!
Paitin: Good comments! True.. Public may be against technology etc.. but only to a certain point. Xrays.. true, if you had a cancer screening and it saved your life.. would you be against technology?
If you were a student.. and your school under seige..and you could get police and help w/ a cell phone.. would you not use it to save your life?
If you were being stalked.. alone, would use not use your cell phone to call for help?
If you house was on fire.. you were stuck in a room and couldn't get out..would u not call 911 and let the fire dept know where you are?
If you child is choking to death.. would you not pick up a cell phone and call for help?
Look people if you think people are lazy and fat .. eat the wrong things and don't care about getting out and working out..
Then please send donations to me.. now!
I am over weight.. I need and want to loose, for my health.
But I work 2 full time jobs, to make ends meet .. most of the time! Plus I care for a grandchild and family. I volunteer in the community when I can, which is often.
I'd love to stay home, not work .. and just work on taking care of myself. Concentrate on loosing the weight.
So if you can please send donations.. immediately I can start taking care of me . I won't look terrible and overweight. I won't cost you extra money to care for me later in life..
And you won't have an excuse to put down other people as you will be helping me out!
You can make a difference!
Send donations to: Yeah sure you'd rather put others down and bellyache!

I REMEMBER READING BACK IN THE EARLY NINETIES HOW CELL PHONES CAUSE BRAIN DAMMAGE. THE TOWERS WHERE THESE CELL PHONES ARE LOCATED CAN EMIT A LOW FREQUENCY SOUND UNDETECTABLE TO HUMAN EAR, LIKE A DOG WHISTLE, HOWEVER; WHEN EMITTED THESE FREQUENCIES CAUSE MEMORY LOSS!!!
I DID LATER READ THAT EAR PIECES CAN HELP PROTECT THE CELL PJONE USER SOME WHAT, BUT HOW MUCH?

You have a point but RF is a type of radiation. It's non-ionizing radiation, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is harmless. Microwave ovens also use RF, and I try to avoid sticking my head inside them unless absolutely necessary ;)
This is not a simple problem, it needs careful study, and unfortunately there is gazillions of dollars of profit behind one answer and alot of lawsuits & unhappy people behind the other.

Here's something that I have wondered about since I got my laptop. If you have a lap top then you already know how warm and uncomfortable they can get if you actually sit them on your lap. I know personally I have literally started getting warm enough to feel weak. But heres the real concern. A Lap Top computer puts out a certain amount of EMF, not to mention the ones that now have built in transmitters and receivers (Wireless internet). By the the way EMF is (Electro Magnetic Frequency). Now for women I am not sure if this would have any affect at all, but for me being a Man and having a piece of equipment sit on my lap putting out fairly high EMF among other frequencies I wonder if it actually is enough to make me sterle. It may be a dumb question, but it took them alot of time to test and test and assure us our cell phones are not doing anything to us, well essentially a computer is a cell phone with alot more power. I guess I could find out by taking some tests, since I happen to know I was healthy in that way before. So if suddenly there is a change it would have to make me wonder how many of us are victims. Well if anyone has checked into this before let me know so I can be sure I have good swimmers still.

I love the dialog going on here. It's clear that many of us see the futulity and lurking madness in living cellular, virtual lives. It's true that there is a magic in the net, and that if used properly, can unleash a torrent of great ideas, both arcane and profane knowledge, however, we are creatures of the earth who must give due respect and primary love back to her. This is how we will stay sane. This being said, technology is the key to the question, "how will our species survive?" We must colonize other galaxies in the future, and we will. We must solve earth's impending dates with meteors. We must learn to connect at the heart at every level of our being in order to truely live up to humanity's glorious potential. I just wish I could remember to take me blur-tooth out of my ear when I fall asleep at night. Scott

Dave I went to your website www.AssholesAmongUs and thought it was strictly an informational site. The opening poem and the tone of the links...well, and I didn't realize you were trying to sell books and items on ebay.
I think you miss the point. It's not that technology overuse is responsible for all these bad physical things it "does to us_ - I agree we do it to ourselves.
But it does tremendously damage mental and psychic health. It devalues notions like warmth, human thoughtfulness of others (go ahead, get into the lane ahead of me). It creates a sort of rude disassociative disorder where humans fail to care how they communicate directly person-to-person. It eats up enormous amounts of time. It provides addictive distraction from being in touch with our genuine feelings about the events of real flesh humanlife. Every single one of us will walk through the exact same door - of death. Do we want this experience, in this tactile place, this earth - to be all mind-numbing techlife?

I am a former cell phone tower tech.I did this job for about 6 years,RF doesn't stay in your body. You would need to be hit with a pretty big blast of rf to hurt you.Cell phones don't cause cancer in other wise heathly humans.People being stupid is the problem.Anything can hurt you,if your not careful your car, shower, stove, etc.

I have never owned a cell phone nor intend to ever own one. If someone needs to get ahold of me, they can leave a message and I'll return the call when I get home. If someone wants to reach you that badly, they'll just keep trying. Unless one is a doctor or on-call for 24-hours cell phones are unnecessary. There is a psychologist who was on the Oprah show who stated that most people own cell phone because it makes them feel as if they're important. I think cell phone users are rude, just use them in restaurants, on buses, etc. and don't care that they are disturbing others. I had to listen to a very loud spoken woman the other day who had to talk about when she got home how she was going to take a shower, etc. Couldn't that call have waited until she arrived at home?
