Are Your Gadgets Making You Sick? (7)

Dominic Patrick, the British boy, spent a rainy day inside playing games. Tucking his legs underneath himself for 10 straight hours caused Deep-Vein Thrombosis, a serious condition that often affects long-haul air travelers who sit in one place for too long.
After five hours behind the controls of a game called 'True Crime: New York City,' Amy Kopaska of Iowa was found by her mom thrashing around, eyes dilated and foaming at the mouth. According to her doctor, long-term exposure to light patterns in the game had triggered Amy's seizure.
The South Korean man, identified only as Lee, spent 50 straight hours playing the game 'Starcraft' in an Internet café, pausing only for toilet breaks and brief naps. Lee had eaten next to nothing in that time, and his death following a collapse was attributed to heart failure caused by extreme exhaustion.
How to prevent or cure it: So, how can video gamers avoid ambulance trips? In all three cases the answer is simply to limit the amount of time you spend gaming, and take plenty of breaks. As we recently reported, the Chinese government is actually writing this bit of advice into law.

I believe that all 3 cases are not truly related to electronic devises. the british boys case is obvious that he cut off his blood supply to his legs and trapping the blood in his legs when he sat down so his blood began to coagulate. the girl probably had a severe history of epilepsy. lastly who in their right minds could play a video game for 50 straight hours anyway with little breaks. without eating and probably drinking nothing and if he was out of shape and probably genetically prone to heart attacksthen it could easily happen under those extreme circumstances.
MasmunApr 12th 2007 10:25PM
there have been several newer studies in diffrent countries on the connection between cell phones and brain tumors, the findings show theat cell phones have no effect on them. do you realize that almost all electronic devices emit radiation of some sort? the type of radiation from cell phones is harmless unless in extremely high amounts. people worry themselves into being sick, higher stress levels increase occurances of illness. as an earlier poster said kids sitting at home and becoming obese is not technoliges fault but more of a parents fault.
parents and the media are always looking for someone to blame for things, be it music, video games or movies for either behavior problems or mental issues. the same thing goes for kids not playing outside anymore or having fun with friends. technoligy is a plus in our lives, what do you think has allowed us to live longer healthier lives? allowed communication over long distances? travel of distances with out need of walking or riding some sort of animal? knowledge and the overall improvement of life for humans? everything taken for granted today is from technoligy. if it wasnt for that we would still be living in the tree's eating nuts and berries and any meat we could catch with our hands raw. think about it. all of the tools we use is technoligy of a past age. for me i am glad for tech. and do not worry over it, because i know the truth about it and how it has improved the lives of the human race.

Masmun- very well said. I completely agree.
Emiro GonzalezApr 14th 2007 9:59AM
Masmun / Robin: do either one of you have children?
Sounds to me like yo do not. Do you have any idea on how difficult (if not impossible) it is to fight against the millions upon millions of dollars that all these electronic manufacturers, music moguls, etc. pour into the airwaves just to target our children? Add to that the need for most parents to WORK to survive in this crazy economy and simply put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, and what do you get? an extremely unfair competition.
You can ban TV, certain music, newspapers, magazines, etc. from your home to keep your children safe from the barrage of commercials. Is that realistic though? When they go to school they will talk to their friends, they will see what their friends play with, what they wear, what they eat. I suppose that children could be kept home at all times to prevent this. Is this realistic?
Before you add your two cents to a forum get informed. Do not sucumb to the all-too-common stereotype of "...parents blaming everyone else..." crap.

Emiro Gonzalez, well said. I agree 100%.
MasmunApr 17th 2007 3:54PM
Actually, I have a child, again it is called being a parent it is up to you to make the decision for your child, as they grow older yes they make more of their own, but forming good eating habits as well as the habits of reading and playing outside is important. Both myself and my spouse work, we work opposing shifts but one of is always home and able to provide the support and direct our child needs to form good habits. It is also up to us as parents to provide our children with what they need, not what they want. We have the power to remove items that may cause bad habits to form or to limit the time our children have using said items. The society in this day and age seems to be looking for something to blame other than ourselves for our actions as well as our children’s. It does not matter how much is spent on advertising to our children it our decision to buy the stuff for them that is truly behind these things.

You people in disbelief are truly sad souls. No one can deny that overall the health of human beings is steadly deteriorating. It has to be caused by something. Humans are imperfect and thus will produce imperfect products. Look @ the side effects of many medicines, these drugs are supposed to remove one ailment but they can possibly lead to several more severe ones. HELLOO people..man will bring about his own destruction if only given the time. You guys better wake up and stop being so naive.

whoa. This is very interesting. The only thing I've ever gotten is a headache from my eyes straining (I wear glasses). And in response to the Masmum, Robin and Emiro Gonzalez's comments: I completely agree with Emiro. I have a little brother who is overweight, and it is completely unfair to blame the parents. My mom is always trying to help my borhter eat right and excercise, but you can't force a kid to excercise/eat right/stay off video games. You just have to hope that children are going to do the right things.

To bri~
Your mom is the parent. Why doesn’t she take away the video games? Remove the unhealthy food from the house? Those are all choices she can make. In addition, just hoping they are going to do the right thing is not enough; you have to show them what the right thing is. Lead by example, instill within them good habits at an early age. Be in control not the other way around. Encourage good behavior and discourage bad behavior. Discipline seems to be a novel concept now a days and just giving up or caving into the demands or our kids seems to be the growing norm.
MattApr 17th 2007 9:52PM
Bri, It IS the parents fault. Children are too stupid to realize that they are slowly killing themselves by not eating right. I usually don't exercise much but i eat right and i've already lost about 25 pounds (losing roughly 2.5 pounds every week) by changing my eating habits. As i'm typing this i'm eating a carrot rather than the candy bar i'd be eating a few months ago. How is it the parents fault u ask? Because kids (normally) don't have money to spend on candy... so how the hell do the get it?(they give a homeless guy beer to buy it for them! DUH!) Their parents, grandparents, gaurdians etc. ALSO, i can blame the parent's COOKING... and amount of food cooked. there's a reason that have SERVING SIZE on the nutritional facts... but u never look at those DO YOU? if your SSSSSOOOO smart why don't u ASSIST your mother in helping your little brother?? if u don't help him now he'll be fat forever! trust me.
jamesApr 26th 2007 6:43AM
well i have killed about 3 nes old decks for playing em to much like almost 12 hours or more only thing i gotten form it was carpel tunnel snydrome so it does have some side effects to over doing it jus like the food ya eat too much ya not gonna like the side effect even if the dish was tasty modaration is key to healthy life :}

There IS technology available to use our electronics more safely and with less impact from the harmful emfs coming through them > go to www.mybiopro.com/onebrain and check it out for yourself. I've seen their devices totally change someone's experience with bluetooth and cellphones and laptop devices from unpleasant to just fine.

I just wanted to let everybody know that there is an amazing new product out there that blocks EMF's, whether they are coming from your cell phone, computers, or whatever. They are inexpensive and science has proven them to be absolutely effective. The company is called 8ight. I was so impressed with it, I have a link on the front page of my website (www.winningfactor.com) to this company. Check this product out. It will truly block all of the negative effects of EMF's.

Emiro - I don't think they were saying to completely eliminate the influences, but to limit the amount of time the kid can be on the TV/Computer. My mom, for instance, lets me have a half hour of T.V. for every hour that I clean or excercize. During the school year, I have a two-hour limit on the TV and computer, unless I'm working on assignments from school. I'm healthy, exactly on the 90% line on the doctor's charts, and have an average BMI. If my mom hadn't told me to do this kind of switch-off, I'm sure that wouldn't be the case.

When my children became old enough to play these video games, strict rules were put into play. They are only allowed to play on the week ends, only after their chores are done, and after any week end homework, sent home from school, is completed. Even then, they are only allowed to play these video games upto four hours per day per child at the most. Parents need to take responsibility. Who is the adult in the house? You, or them?
BillSep 20th 2007 9:09PM
Now that is extreme! 50 hours? Hell, my video game hour count never went past 3 hours straight. Theres always dinner, bathroom breaks and other such things that distract me. I constantly move around, changing the way I'm sitting. It's a good idea to keep getting involved in physical activity as well as mentally stimulating activity because it will keep your body fit and possibly less prone to these problems. (If, you do in fact sit for 6 hours straight without moving you're just putting stress on your body)

I really appreciated this article. I am curious about how many people are experiencing difficulty sleeping during or after using wireless devices. The non-ionizing radiation which they emit has been shown by many researchers to be interpreted by the pineal gland as a form of "light" which stimulates it and disturbes the delicate "sleep wakefulness cycle" which the pineal gland has a role in regulating. If you are having diffiuculty sleeping I encourage you to experiment and turn off all wireless devices and see if that helps.
