Turn In Your Gun, Get a Free Xbox

Mexican Government swapping XboxesNews comes from Engadget (via Reuters) of an interesting new program being instituted in Tepito, reportedly one of the toughest neighborhoods in Mexico. According to Reuters, the government is offering gang members, and anyone else packing calor, some tasty tech incentives to trade in their weapons. Give up a small-caliber handgun and you'll get yourself a new Xbox video game console or some cash. Larger returnables like rifles will net you a new PC worth about $769.
This certainly isn't the first time governments have offered deals to gang members as a way to encourage them to hand in weapons no questions asked. However, getting Microsoft on board is an intriguing tactic. The Redmond, Washington-based company must be pleased, since it's the only one providing the software on those PCs and Xbox 360s. It appears Bill Gates will stop at nothing to keep ahead of Sony's PS3 install base...and to help make the world a better place, of course.
